Collection

This Museum has a vast collection of about one Lac specimens. This can be broadly classified into main five sections.

  1. Archaeological Section comprising of pre-historical implements, pottery and bricks, sculptures, terracotta’s, metal images, seals, beads, stone inscriptions and copper plates.
  2. Numismatic Section comprising of gold, silver and copper coins, medals and paper currency.
  3. Art Section comprising of paintings and textiles, metal ware, wood work, ivory and toys.
  4. Natural History
  5. Ethnography
Apart from these sections the collection has also good representation of jewels and Gold Ornaments, Arms and Armours, Manuscripts and Farmans, Musical Instruments and other miscellaneous curio items.

The Museum possesses some rare sculptures representing Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jaina pantheons. Early Ayagapattas, earliest inscribedimage of Saraswati, Bhita panchamukhi-Siva linga, earliest image of Balarama, Mankunvar Buddha, Simhanada Avalokiteshwar are some of the icons worth mentioning. Bhitari Seal of Gupta emperor Kumar Gupta, Hadaha stone inscription of Isanavarmana, copper plates of Harsha from Madhuban and Banskhera are famous epigraphs in the annals of Indian History. The Museum has some beautiful terracottas from Kausambi, Mathura, Sravasti and Bhitargaon. It has also good collection of beads and copper age implements. This institution is very rich in coin collection of Kusana kings, Gupta Emperors, Delhi Sultans, Mughal Emperors and Oudh Rulers. The coin cabinet includes collection of ancient jewellery and art pieces. Some of these masterpieces have also found their place in Indian Art Exhibitions sent abroad.
